Most people love a curry, but did you know that turmeric is one of the herbs that is known for it’s beneficial cancer reducing properties, as well as also having many other health benefits.
Curcumin has long been studied as a beneficial herb in cancer treatment, and been found to have an affect on cancer growth and development.
Studies have shown that it can
• contribute to the death of cancerous cells
• can reduce angiogenesis (which is the growth of new blood vessels in tumours)
• can reduce metastasis (the spread of cancer)
In a 30-day study in 44 men with lesions in the colon that sometimes turn cancerous, 4 grams of curcumin per day reduced the number of lesions by 40%

Curcumin is also known to be a substance that fights inflammation and is helpful in treating some other conditions like:
• Heart disease
• Metabolic syndrome
• Alzheimer’s disease
• Various other degenerative conditions
Cumin and Curcumin
These two spices have similar-sounding names. They also have many qualities in common and are used for flavours in different curry dishes.
They are valued largely for their ability to stimulate digestion, as well as for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Both herbs are known for their potential in fighting chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
The active ingredients in cumin seeds have an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effect.
If you suffer pain or inflammation that often triggers other conditions, by adding cumin to your diet, it may counter some of those effects.
Note*There are some people who should not take turmeric.
They include those with gallbladder problems, bleeding disorders, diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux disease, infertility, iron deficiency, liver disease, hormone-sensitive conditions and arrhythmia. Read more here
Everything in moderation – even moderation
There are some simple ways to increase your daily tumeric/curcumin intake:
- Make a curry dish. Turmeric is a key ingredient in yellow curries. Try this delicious coconut and chicken curry
- Make a rub to put on fish, chicken or beef before grilling – Mix powdered turmeric with ground cumin, ground ginger, garlic powder, sea salt, and black pepper, and then rub it on before grilling.
- Add Turmeric to your eggs, omelette or scrambled eggs– it gives the dish some colour and a boost of flavour. More egg recipes here
- Add it to roasted vegatables before roasting – It can add an earthy, peppery flavour to your favourite roasted vegetables.
- Make some “tumeric” milk. Warm a cup of milk in a saucepan with ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder and 1 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger. Simmer for 15 minutes. Turn off the heat, strain, and stir in a tablespoon of honey.
