School holidays have arrived again and there are kids still in lock down in some countries.
Maddie, my 11 year old granddaughter has sent me a good healthy recipe for a tasty orange drink.
Maddie’s healthy Vitamin C drink
- Get 6 -8 oranges ( or however many you require depending on the number of glasses required)
- Have a sieve, bowl and orange squeezer handy
- Cut the oranges in half and then squeeze the juice
- Sieve the squeezed orange juice over the bowl
- Pour the squeezed, sieved juice into a jug and add water if required ( or ice cubes)
- Refrigerate till required.
- To serve, cut a thin slice of orange and wedge it on the rim of the glass for decoration
It just shows, you are never to young to learn about the goodness of fruit and vegetables, and I am so proud of Maddie for sending me her little recipe. It shows great initiative for somebody so young.
Different types of oranges
Some of the New Zealand and Australian Oranges include varieties such as Valencia Oranges, Navel Oranges, and Blood Oranges
- The Navel Orange actually grows a second “twin” fruit opposite its stem. The second fruit remains under developed, but from the outside, it resembles a human navel—hence the name. They peel easily and are known as a great tasting orange.
- Valencia Oranges are sometimes quite sweet, and have a distinctive brightly coloured juice that other citrus fruits don’t have. The juice is popular for use in bottled orange juices due to the bright colour which many people like.
- Blood Oranges are exotic-looking with a crimson-red pigment inside and outside on it’s rind. They are less acidic than usual navel varieties and have softer flesh.
Oranges are low in calories, healthy, and a nutritious way of consuming vitamin C and antioxidants. They also offer a good source of potassium and fibre, which are known for helping in reducing inflammation and fighting disease.
