Can you hear me?

Everyone has bad days. Some days are just worse than others!

When we communicate with others it is important to feel that you are heard. How often do you feel that people talk over you?

It happens in shops, especially as you get older, or with people who are too busy to care.

We never know what others are going through, as they do not know what we are coping with.

Therefore, by learning how to communicate from an early age is an important part of feeling heard, as it is also mainly about learning how to respect others.

By encouraging our children to communicate open and honestly can help them build strong healthy relationships.

By the time they get to their teen years, there will be so many outside influences that will not only challenge them, but will challenge you as a parent, caregiver, or grandparent.

Benefits of respecting others

There are many benefits to respecting others. For one, there will be less conflict in your life as you are less likely to argue with people.

The bible says “treat others how you would like to be treated”.

If you reflect on that simple message, then it is easy. If you show your respect for somebody, they are more likely to reciprocate that feeling.

Listening to reply is not ‘helpful’, but listening to ‘understand’ what the other person is saying, even by reading their body language, will give you a clue as to what to say when replying.

If you feel you have to respond in anger, then it is far better to walk away, or if you are on a telephone call, to excuse yourself from the conversation and hang up.

In this day and age of social media, teenagers are swamped by peer pressure. There are loud, brash teenagers who think that this sort of behaviour is normal, and they hurt others, or bully others without thinking about the consequences of their actions.

All that does is shows others that they actually have no respect for themselves.

Alternatively, if you respect yourself, you can respect others, and it will lead to greater social connectivity as your peers will want to engage with you and be around you.

It is important to practice empathy and kindness and active listening, so that you can see things from another person’s perspective.

Respect is a two way street- if you want it, then you have to give it! It also has a boomerang effect, as it comes back to you and is the first step to living in harmony and peace.

By being kind to others, and by being compassionate, non-judgemental, and smiling in greeting or helping others not only makes you feel better, but it is a way of making the world a better place for all.

Respect for ourselves guides our morals, respect for others guides our manners.

Understanding Dementia

Wendy was only 58 when she was diagnosed with dementia.

This brave lady has written a book about her disease. I was listening to Radio NZ this morning and heard an interview with Wendy who spoke of her life now.

She seemed to normalise the disease.

A disease that has been feared by most of us as we age.

She spoke in such a logical way and explained that there is is a beginning, a middle and so much life to be lived till the end.

I heard her positivity and remembered my late husband’s words as he battled cancer.

He also believed that tomorrow was not promised to everyone, but while he was alive he was going to be happy and enjoy the ride.

Dementia the terminal disease

Dementia is a terminal disease but so is living says Wendy. She explained the things that have helped her along the way, and she held my attention.

She spoke about how her senses were affected, about not feeling hungry or thirsty anymore and having to remind herself to drink and eat.

Everyone with dementia has a different journey, but Wendy tells how different things like colours have a huge affect on her.

A black TV screen switched off looks like a black hole to Wendy but a black mat felt like a hole that she could fall into. 

That must be frightening.

Also when her daughters dressed in black clothing, sometimes, she only sees heads walking around the room as there is a void were the black is.

The brain changes

With dementia brains don’t seem to interpret the signals anymore she says.

She found that she battled with patterns on clothes or on carpet, as it can seem as if there is something moving on them like insects crawling about. Her eyes do not interpret the information correctly when in that moment.

Dementia is an invisible disability

Wendy said she gets lost and disorientated sometimes when out and about, but her community now makes her feel safe.

In the village where she lives, they notice if she is disorientated and they help her. They first met her when she used to take photos of everything and she became known as “The camera lady”.

Wendy can recognise the signs now and accepts and adapts to the situation when in the moment. When she begins to feel disorientated she looks for a smiling face to ask that person to point her in the right direction.

She has learnt not to panic and to question whether it is real or whether it is dementia playing tricks with her brain. Photos help her. They seem reassuring.

Dementia causes personality changes and Wendy experienced a change in the way of now liking hugging and touching.

Wendy said she never was a “touchy feely” person but now she loves to be hugged, and her family enjoy her hugs too.

Wendy has normalised dementia. She wrote her book to help others.

Fearful behaviour

She tells us that sometimes it is hard to understand why a loved one with Dementia is feeling fearful or panicking, and this could be a sign that their needs are not being met.

Family who are supporting their loved ones need to try and live in the moment of their loved one with the illness.

If they are fearful of a fire nearby when there is none, it is better to comfort them and say that you will go and look to check that everything is okay, instead of telling them that they are imagining it.

They need reassurance as their world is very different from everyone else’s. Their reality could be insects crawling all over the carpet, when in fact it is just a patterned carpet. Their eyes tell them something different.

Her advice is that if you want to help a loved one with Dementia then try to live in their world for a moment, as they cannot live in yours anymore.

Reassure them. The power of touch and a gentle smile will go along way for somebody who has lost the ability to talk.

It can mean the world, just like it does to a baby when they are learning facial expressions and tones and voices.

What followed was many, many blood tests and visits to doctors and  eventually a referral to a knowledgeable endocrinologist.

It was a relief when I was diagnosed and soon I was managing the ups and downs of the thyroid medication and getting used to the blood tests every few months to establish my TSH and T3 and T4 levels.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease, an illness where the immune system turns against the body’s own tissues and attacks them. My immune system attacks my thyroid, which leads to hypothyroidsim.

It has taken many years to get the dosage right, and after 15 years I still have good and bad days, and have to adjust the medication to suit.

When I got Covid 19 after a trip overseas, despite being double vaccinated and boosted, I became quite unwell, and over a few months developed shingles for a second time.

I now accept that my immune system cannot cope like it did when I was healthy, and so I try to do what I have always done.

That is to be logical, isolate the things that are different in my life, for instance, if I can avoid stressful situations then that helps.

Hypothyroidism symptoms

Some of the symptoms can often mimic other conditions. They may include:

  • Muscle aches and stiffness and weakness
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Dry hair and hair loss
  • Dry skin
  • Elevated cholesterol
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Hoarse voice
  • Forgetfulness
  • Puffy face
  • Slow heart rate
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight.

Some days feel like it is a never-ending battle.

I do not eat large meals, and try to control my intake of everything, yet I gain weight, and am hurt especially when someone points out that I have gained weight, no matter how insignificant it is.

If I ate huge servings of takeaway food, or preservative laden food then maybe then the comments would be justified.

But I rarely eat that sort of food,  and avoid sugary and starchy foods and most nightshades.

Finding out that you have an auto immune disease can not only be scary, but a relief to eventually find out why you feel so tired, and why you are putting on weight when you are actually eating less.

Exercise is good, but some days my joints and muscles are so stiff and sore it is hard to get excited about even walking the dog.

The guilt and frustration  often accompanies the feeling of being unwell and of not being able to do things that you love, or fully engage in life, which could affect your relationships with friends and family.

I always feel the need to push myself to do things, and often will overdo things and feel much worse off.

Acceptance is a big part of moving forward as well as trying to be compassionate to yourself. This is difficult if you have always been a busy person who likes to get things done, and fixed.

I have accepted that while I am a “fixer” that I, myself, now cannot be fixed.

By accepting that, I can try and manage my autoimmune disease in the best way that I can.

Counting blessings helps, keeping busy helps, and taking time to sit in the garden with my caring partner at the end of the day watching the birds, butterflies and our crazy dog definitely helps.

If you are suffering from an incurable illness, no matter how big or small, I wish you acceptance, happiness and tolerance. It is important to be tolerant of other’s perceptions of your illness, as remember they cannot see it, so forgive them.

So what is stressful for a teenager?

When you are a teenager, there are many things that can cause stress.

Most teens don’t really like to talk about it so will mostly struggle with their anxiety on their own.

Teenagers are known for getting far less sleep than the recommended amount of sleep we require to function properly every day.

Some common reasons for teens lack of sleep:

  • Watching TV late at night if they have a TV in their room
  • Using social media constantly
  • Staying up late to finish a homework assignment
  • Playing play station or X box

It is a well known fact that teenagers who like sport and exercise enjoy more sleep, and are happier when exercise is part of their daily routine.

If teens also remembered to eat nutrient rich foods and tried to have many interests and hobbies to keep them busy it would also help.

Other things teens stress about can relate to puberty, or body image, and whether they are good enough.

There might be bullying happening at school, or perhaps they have negative thoughts due to their social environment, and are lonely.

Since the introduction of the internet, most teens do not spend enough time socialising face to face, instead preferring to use social media and gaming consoles.

This way of communicating does not help them to feel less sad or lonely or less confused. It only makes things harder.

Try encouraging your teenager to engage more with others by spending more time outside socialising with their friends, or by playing sport, or by joining some sort of social  group.

Dance groups or cycle clubs, or studying a musical instrument would go a long way to helping reduce stress and anxiety.

Volunteering for dog walking or other social activities are also helpful.

Teenagers also need to be encouraged better manage their time by planning their schedule.

Instead of just coming home and playing games or sitting on their phone, or eating unhealthy food, they could take an hour a day, or enough time to study at least the day before any test or exam.

This will leave them less stressed and anxious, and probably not as sleep deprived when the time comes to write the exam, as they have managed their time better.

A good idea too is to encourage teens to keep a tidy, organised bedroom because if it is messy and disorganised it will cause more stress when they cannot find anything in the mess.

 Some symptoms that your teen is stressed or anxious

  •  sleep deprivation
  • depression and anxiety
  • being anxious or panicky
  • stomach aches or headaches
  • concentration issues
  • not wanting to go to school
  • withdrawal from friends or family
  • feelings of being overwhelmed
  • loss of interest in  sport or hobbies.

Teenagers often cannot put their fears and anxiety into words so by understanding, and listening to what is ‘not’ being said, and showing empathy and practical support is best.

Mental health

 I was having a chat with a troubled friend recently when she commented that I was always postive and happy and that I did not suffer from mental health issues like she did.

She told me that she sometimes hated my positivity because she did not feel positive. She told me she hated Facebook because it made her feel lonelier.

She said she hated looking at the garden because it only reminded her how much she had to do, or how much she would have to pay somebody to do it.

I understood her feelings, because we have all been there in one way or another. She had been divorced for several years, and hated her job, and was lonely.

When I lost my husband after 22 gruelling months of watching him battle cancer, I was bereft and in fact at one stage thought I would rather die than hang around to face the many challenges put before me.

But there are many ways of dealing with our mental health. Start by thinking about the small things that you are grateful for and about the things that you have control over.

 We can control our thoughts even though it is sometimes difficult. I knew I was grateful for so many things.

My sons are decent human beings married to other decent human beings. My grandchildren are beautiful little beings. I had a roof over my head and a job.

Walking with music was healing. Planting pots of flowers and herbs was healing. Walking my dog or sitting holding my dog was comforting.

Playing with my grandchildren and listening to their laughter was healing. Working and engaging my brain in stimulating  and creative things was helpful.

Exercise definitely helps, so begin slowly and build up as you feel more confident. Coping with depression is different for all of us.

Endorphins are your body’s natural pain relievers, and they can boost your mood, too. A gentle walk is a great way to start. Swimming is another good way to get those endorphins going.

Learning to understand mental health issues is a complex process but we can all try and help each other by not judging each other.

Lastly, practice a little self love and have good thoughts and a positive attitude, and accept any help from family and friends with grace. 

Have an achievable goal and try to move forward each day, no matter how small the step.

Are you a hoarder?

They say you should always “declutter” when selling your home?

When I was selling my own home after the death of my husband, I wondered if I was a hoarder!

They say that hoarding is often a coping mechanism.

Apparently if we are bereaved , or perhaps it could be triggered when the kids leave home and we suffer empty nest syndrome.

It is probably a combination of many things, and we are often unconscious of doing it – it is a distraction from thinking of something difficult like loss or a change in our lives, so much like some people will comfort- eat as a distraction to just get through the day!

How do you tackle hoarding when selling?

If you are preparing your own home for sale, or perhaps you could be helping an aged parent ready their home for sale, then the best possible way to address the situation is with understanding and sensitivity.

Everyone treasures different things. I know I still have my children’s first letters that they ever wrote, and no doubt I will keep them till I die.

It is when there are some big items that take up a lot of space, or piles and piles of old magazines, or newspapers, or old parts for machines no longer in use that a problem becomes bigger.

Do you then pay for storage for these things or do you just address the situation head on?

Clearing everything out will often make a situation worse for an anxious person

If they are digging their heels in it will make the situation worse – They might then seek out more items to hoard to replace the ones that they have lost.

As well as hoarding, there are some that suffer from chronic disorganisation.

It all just gets too much for these people. However, they might welcome the help although will not admit it.

Sadly, those with a hoarding disorder will often be stereotyped as unclean and lazy when it is often not the case.

They are extremely attached to their possessions and do not know why and it can be traumatic for them, and when approached to rid themselves of their hoarding it can cause a subconscious reaction to such a loss.

Hoarding should be tackled with empathy and care

Let them have a support network, and let them work with people they trust.

Make sure that nothing is done without their permission.

Getting them to make the decisions ultimately helps them cope in the long-term.

If they are aware of the problem, then you can then work on it and declutter the home ready for sale.
