Zoomers and creative writing

Zoomers and creative writing

Children and creative writing

Maddie (aged 11) loves creative writing and has sent me her reasoning as to why it is so good for children.

Maddie is from a generation now referred to as “a Zoomer” – Generation Z

I love that she is busy in the school holidays being so creative, and that she sends me her thoughts for this website to share with others.

So thank you Maddie- to quote in her words…

“Story writing is very important in a child’s life.

It gives them a sense of how to be creative and helps them with their identity.

Children are able to communicate with their emotions and of course it improves their reading skills.

Writing also helps children to learn new words and explore different ideas.

It helps with hand-eye co-ordination and improves fine motor skills and muscles by just holding the pencil or pen.

It also helps them channel their emotions and express how they feel.

My idea to help us children with our writing

Create a colourful poster to put up on the bedroom wall with tips about different types of nouns, verbs and adjectives that help with creative writing.

You could do pictures to describe the types of words.

Examples

  • Noun- a noun is a word that names something such as a place, person or thing
  • Verb – a verb is the action in the sentence – for example a “doing” thing
  • Adjective-  a describing word like ” Big, happy, or sad”
  • Adverb is a word that describes a verb ie: “he sings loudly”

Creative writing also helps us to develop creative thoughts by using our imaginations.

It also helps broaden our thought processes and will improve problem solving and logical skills, so it is something to enjoy from a young age.”

A world of text speak

Note from an oldie 🙂

In a world of text speak and emojis, it seems that writing skills and spelling are sadly sometimes being overlooked, so it feels important to encourage our Mokopuna (grandchildren) to handwrite their stories.

They will be able to communicate better with others and will benefit from many of the other positive skills associated with story writing.

There are some great resources out there these days to help children with their learning. Here is an example of one such website that I found.

Feeling like a sad bear?

Feeling like a sad bear?

Seasonal affective disorder

Sometimes when the days seem dull and the sun forgets to shine for days on end, we can suffer from something called SAD (Seasonal affective disorder).

This depressive disorder is linked to the seasons of the year and is more common in countries that don’t have plenty of sunshine all year round.

If you have trouble “over sleeping” in the winter, feel agitated or over tired, and experience appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates, you could be affected by SAD.

The difference between SAD and depression though, is that most of the SAD symptoms will go when the weather improves and the days get longer and the sun shines more.

Experts believe that less sunlight in the winter leads to the brain making less serotonin, a chemical linked to stabilising our feelings and regulating our moods.

It enables brain cells and other nervous system cells to communicate with each other.

So when the nerve cell pathways in the brain that regulate our mood stop functioning properly, it leads to feelings of depression and other symptoms of fatigue and weight gain.

Like most people these days, I dread the arrival of the electricity bill in the winter!

As a lot of us are working from home now since the onset of Covid-19, it is something that is probably causing concern for many more people.

It is really important to keep your home at a Healthy home standard  and more so now since the new variants of Covid- 19, such as the Delta variant have emerged .

Other worrying sicknesses like RSV are affecting so many babies and children recently, and hospitals are finding it hard to keep up with the rise in cases.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

Children with RSV might present with cold symptoms such as

• a stuffy or runny nose

• sore throat

• mild headache

• cough

• fever

• generally feeling unwell

Staying healthy is a challenge for a lot of us these days, while we wait to be vaccinated against Covid-19, so it is really important to also take care of our mental health as well.

Greens are good says Maddie

Greens are good says Maddie

Spinach and Kale are 2 vegetables that are nutrient rich with loads of antioxidants, vitamins, calcium, iron and more.

Maddie ( my eleven year old granddaughter) is on school holidays at the moment and has sent me a recipe that she has found for a healthy lifestyle.

She has done her research on a Spinach and Kale Smoothie and wanted to share it with others  who like a healthy lifestyle.

Spinach and Kale smoothie

1. Spinach (one or two handfuls of pre-washed )

2. Kale ( one or two handfuls of pre-washed )

3. Water ( one glass)

Use a Nutribullet or Blender

This is a very healthy quick “on the go” smoothie and all up has approximately 500 calories

Interesting facts about these green leaves

Spinach consists of

  • 1. 3.6g carbs
  • 2. 23 cal
  • 3. 2.9 g of protein
  • 4. 91% water
  • 5. Lots of nutrients and antioxidants
  • 6. 0.4% fat
  • 7. 40% vitamin C

Kale consists of

  • 1. 33.3 cal
  • 2. 6g carbs
  • 3. 84% water
  • 4. 4% protein
  • 5. 7% fat
  • 6. Vitamin C
  • 7. Vitamin B6

For a variation of this smoothie, just add a frozen banana, or almond milk, or even Greek yoghurt.

Like all greens it is important to wash before use.

Spinach is rich in high amounts of carotenoids, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Folic Acid, Iron and Calcium, however if consumed in excess there are some risks associated for some people.

Oxalates bind to calcium as they leave our bodies and can increase the risk of kidney stones for some of us.

Kale is a great source of fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and calcium and iron and other nutrients, and is known to help reduce inflammation, strengthen the immune system, and fight oxidative stress, which can help prevent cancer and other illnesses like the common cold and the flu.

A note from Nanna to Maddie*

Dear Maddie, if you are reading your blog on my website, I hope that you are going to eat more spinach and kale now that you have researched it’s goodness, love from Nanna 🙂

“Health-full” honey bees

“Health-full” honey bees

Is honey good for us?

Raw honey has been enjoyed thoughout history and has always been known for its health benefits and medical uses.

It has a source of antioxidants with compounds known as polyphenols which may play a role in preventing heart disease.

Phytonutrients give raw honey it’s antibacterial and antifungal power, as well as it’s antioxidant properties, showing good immune boosting and anti cancer benefits.

Honey contains antioxidants, which can protect the body from inflammation, which can lead to a variety of health issues, including auto immune disorders, heart disease and cancer.

It is also known to help with some digestive issues and has proved to be effective as a treatment for Helicobacter pylori bacteria (H-Pylori) which is a common cause of some ulcers, which are associated with stomach cancer.

Store bought honey generally has been pasteurised to extend it’s shelf life. Some of the beneficial nutrients are destroyed in the process due to the high heat used to kill the yeast and improve the texture and colour.

Why is Manuka honey so expensive?

Manuka honey is also known to have antibacterial effects, and is said to be effective for treating everything from a sore throat to clearing up blemishes on your skin or providing wound care.

The word “Manuka” comes from the Maori name for a tree.

Genuine Manuka Honey has a nice medium sweetness to it, sometimes with a nutty taste and a very subtle, slightly bitter aftertaste.

It is also a popular remedy for colds and flu, and I know of some people who will only buy Manuka honey for the special properties that it is known to possess.

Read more here

The Manuka tree is no longer abundant in New Zealand. It generally grows at a higher altitude, so it makes it harder for beekeepers to access for packing and distribution.

This is the reason it tends to be more expensive than other types of honey.

Risks of raw honey for babies

While it has plenty of beneficial properties, raw honey can also carry harmful bacteria such as Clostridium botulinum which is particularly dangerous for babies.

Raw honey should never be given to a baby less than a year old.

Did you know?

On average, a honey bee will visit 100 flowers during one foraging trip, so they are extremely hardworking in their short lives estimated to be as little as 6 weeks.

Bees make honey for bees, but many people also enjoy it’s beneficial health benefits.

Some research tells us that “worker bees “make only about 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in their short lifetimes.

Read more about bees here

So enjoy your garden with it’s many flowers, as you watch the little worker bees foraging away during their short little lives.

Vanilla essence is not only used to flavour desserts, but it is also added to some hot beverages to add flavour like in tea, coffee or even milk.

Vanilla is also thought to help in relieving pain caused from burns.

Another good tip for bananas –

Peel soft bananas and place in the freezer in a sealed plastic bag.

Later use them to add to deserts. They taste just like banana ice cream!

Home and income… really ?

Home and income… really ?

Home and Income

Many people these days are looking for ways to reduce their mortgage. What better way than to have a property that can be split into two seperate dwellings.

Of course, they have to comply with the building regulations and various council rules and healthy homes standards.

Sometimes when buying or selling it can be quite stressful if you don’t know the rules.

Rules around advertising”home and income” properties

Jenny was attending an open home of a work colleague.

She had been invited  by the work colleague to have a look through the property at the Saturday open home.

She was astounded when she overheard the salesperson telling a buyer that the downstairs area was set up ready to go as a “home and Income” opportunity and that it would be a great way to pay the mortgage off.

The reason this shocked her was that she remembered her work colleague telling her that they could not advertise it as “home & Income” because it did not meet or comply with the building code and standards.

So the salesperson had just misrepresented the use of the property with that one sentence.

Professional code of conduct rules and client care

In fact, the salesperson had broken several rules of the professional code of conduct and client care rules that most real estate salespeople operate under in several countries.

Read more here on the NZ rules

Rule 6.4 relates to not misleading a customer or client, nor providing false information, nor withholding information that should by law or in fairness be provided to a customer or client.

Rule 5.2 says that the licensee must have a sound knowledge of the Act, regulations, rules issued by the Authority (including these rules), and other legislation relevant to real estate agency work.

Advertised price

Jenny then looked at the colourful flyer that she had been handed at the front door.

The price was advertised as “negotiable over”.

She asked the salesperson what the price range was and was told a figure which was in a large price band, starting from a much lower figure than the one she was told by her colleague.

Rule 9.4  says that a licensee must not mislead customers as to the price expectations of the client.

Jenny wondered if her colleague expected to sell for the amount she was told by the salesperson.

She decided to wait until the Monday morning and ask her at the office in person.

Monday arrived and Jenny asked her colleague what sort of price range she was expecting to sell her property in. She was told a price that was at least $60 000 more than what the brochure said.

She then asked about the downstairs area and whether they had managed to get the correct building consent issued. It was then confirmed again that it was not compliant and therefore illegal.

Her colleague told her that she had asked the salesperson to advertise it as “home & Income” as they had rented it out in the past, and she felt that it was worth more as a “home & income” property.

Jenny decided not to pursue the property at that point, realising that there could be issues down the track.

The salesperson should have done his own homework and he would have then found out that the property could not be sold as “home and income”.

In fact the salesperson could be in a spot of trouble with the Regulatory Authority. Read more here

Disclosure is a critical part of selling a property.

So if you are thinking of selling, make sure that you disclose everything that you need to disclose,  and if in doubt, choose an experienced licensed salesperson to explain the pitfalls of non-disclosure.
